Drive south through the Middle Atlas Mountains as the landscape quickly transforms from medieval medina to green mountains.

First stop: Ifrane - 'Little Switzerland of Morocco' with alpine-style architecture, sloped roofs and European atmosphere. See the famous stone lion sculpture, clean streets and manicured parks.

  • Continue through cedar forests near Azrou
  • Stop to observe wild Barbary macaque monkeys in their natural habitat
  • These endangered primates are usually easy to spot in ancient cedar trees - great photo opportunities
Lunch stop in Midelt or along the route - town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas mountains.

Route descends into the spectacular Ziz Valley - one of Morocco's most beautiful valleys. Dramatic gorge lined with thousands of date palms creating a lush green ribbon cutting through the arid landscape. Photo stops at panoramic viewpoints overlooking the valley.

Long but scenic journey as landscape becomes increasingly desert-like. Watch as green mountains give way to rocky plateaus and finally sand dunes.

Arrive in Merzouga in late afternoon. First sight of the massive Erg Chebbi dunes - some reaching 150 meters high.

  • Berber music and storytelling around the campfire
  • Night sky reveals the Milky Way in stunning detail
Overnight in private tent to the profound silence of the Sahara.

Breakfast at the desert camp. Camel trek back to Merzouga village (or 4x4 if preferred).

Quick shower and refreshment at a local auberge. Depart for Marrakech - another long but fascinating journey westward.

Drive through increasingly varied landscapes. Route passes through the Draa Valley or more direct mountain routes with constantly changing scenery.

Lunch stop in Ouarzazate or along the route.

Visit Ait Ben Haddou - UNESCO World Heritage kasbah and Morocco's most famous fortified village built from earth and straw. Iconic filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and many Hollywood productions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour too rushed with only 2 days?

It's definitely fast-paced with long driving days (7-8 hours each day), but many travelers appreciate the efficiency of experiencing the Sahara Desert while traveling between cities. The constantly changing scenery keeps the journey interesting. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, consider our 3-day, 4-day, or 5-day Fes to Marrakech tours.

Can this tour run in reverse from Marrakech to Fes?

Yes! This tour works perfectly in both directions. The itinerary is simply reversed. We run it both ways depending on traveler preferences and schedules—just let us know which direction you need when booking.

What time will I arrive in Marrakech?

You'll typically arrive in Marrakech around 6:00-7:00 PM on Day 2, though this can vary depending on stops, traffic, and weather. We recommend not booking flights or trains from Marrakech on the evening of Day 2—plan to spend at least one night in Marrakech after the tour ends.

Do I need to bring my luggage to the desert camp?

No, just bring a small backpack with essentials for the overnight stay in the desert (warm layers, toiletries, camera, etc.). Your main luggage stays safely locked in the vehicle while you're at the camp. This makes the camel ride much more comfortable.

Can the camel trek be skipped?

Yes, if you prefer or have mobility concerns, we can arrange 4x4 transport directly to and from the camp instead of camels. Just let us know in advance. However, most guests find the camel experience to be a highlight of the tour.

Can I upgrade to a luxury desert camp?

Yes, luxury camp upgrades are available, featuring private ensuite tents with proper beds, private bathrooms with hot showers, and superior dining. The upgrade costs approximately €30-40 extra per person. Both standard and luxury camps include the full desert experience with camel trekking, dinner, and music.

What should I wear and pack for this tour?

Pack layers for varying temperatures—warm days but chilly desert nights, especially October-April. Bring: comfortable walking shoes, warm jacket or fleece, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, camera, and personal toiletries. Women may want to pack a scarf for cultural sensitivity in rural areas.
